Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) Honors Veterans On Veterans Day
The service and sacrifice of veterans is honored each year on November 11th. Veterans have protected the values and freedom this country enjoys today and every day. As a gesture of appreciation, MST in partnership with local veterans service agencies, will continue its tradition of providing a limited number of free bus passes to veterans in need of transportation services.
Veterans services organizations MST works with include: Housing Authority of Monterey County, MPC, Military Veterans Affairs Office (MVAO), Nation’s Finest (Previously known as Veterans Resource Center), Vocational Rehabilitation Specialists, Inc. (VRSI), and Veterans Transition Center.
“There is a need for transportation assistance among the veteran community, and without MST, some would have no connection to support or services outside of their doorstep – it really is a lifeline”, stated Joe Farotte with the Monterey County Military & Veterans Affairs Office (MVAO). Additional resources available this Veterans Day include a Virtual Veterans’ Resource Fair hosted by the MVAO on Tuesday, November 10th, where veterans can visit dozens of veteran service organizations from the comfort and the safety of their own home. Those interested can contact the MVAO for details.
Free passes are provided by Measure Q, a 1/8–cent transportation sales tax approved by voters in November 2014 to benefit seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. Measure Q also funds the taxi voucher program and discount fares (half price to veterans, seniors, and persons with disabilities) on the MST bus system.
