MST RIDERSHIP INCREASES DESPITE LOWER GAS PRICES

Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) saw a ridership increase of close to 70,000 trips from July 1 through December 31, 2008, despite falling gas prices. Gas peaked at $4.60 in June 2008 which led to some drivers getting out of their cars and trying public transportation for their daily commutes. Through the remainder of the year gas prices fell 60 percent, yet MST ridership numbers continued to rise. Many passengers who used MST’s service to save money when gas prices were high in early 2008 haven’t returned to their cars.

“When gas prices were at an all time high more Monterey County residents tried using public transportation instead of their personal vehicles. Many of those passengers discovered MST as a convenient, safe and reliable option and continued to use the service after gas prices fell,” said General Manager/CEO Carl Sedoryk.

Passenger boardings for 2009 are promising as well. MST is on track to have an increase of 150,000 for the year.
